OpenScan is a German project allowing makers to build their own 3D scanner at home with either an Arduino or Raspberry Pi to operate it. You can either download all the plastic parts to print at home on your 3D printer, or buy them from OpenScan by getting in contact with their team.
You can use the OpenScan scanner with anything with a camera — though low-quality webcam shots will show in the final scan. Using a camera, for example your phone, the scanner takes pictures of your chosen object, slightly turning it each time, to create a degree 3D model. I gave it a bit more functionality than just a regular cinematic turntable. I added the possibility to use the turntable to capture photos degrees around an object. The photos are being taken by a smartphone connected to a Bluetooth remote located inside the turntable. I just used the most straight forward, obvious and simple solution to capture these photos, which was to use a servo to press a button on a Bluetooth remote.
I went for this solution due to the fact that Apple products tend to not like the HC and HC Bluetooth modules and refuse to connect to them. To image inside the human body, a CT scanner requires X-rays because the radiation has to be able to penetrate through the body.
If the object is semi-transparent, it is actually possible to conduct CT scanning using visible light! The technique is called optical CT, which is different than the more popular optical imaging technique known as optical coherence tomography. Halfway through the project, I realized that photogrammetry, another 3D scanning technique, requires much of the same hardware as an optical CT scanner.

An X-ray is like a shadow, and has all the 3D information projected into a single 2D image. To make 3D reconstructions, a CT scanner acquires X-ray scans over many angles by either rotating the object or the source-detector array.
The images collected by a CT scanner are called sinograms, and they display absorption of X-rays through one slice of the body vs.
Using this data, a cross section of the object can be acquired by using a mathematical operation called the inverse Radon transform. You can also save it as an 3D stl file but this doesn't work to all platforms.The impressive results have to be seen to be believed. Builders of the budget scanner will need their own high quality digital camera—unlikely to be found within that strict budget! Once that small condition is met, however, the process becomes extremely wallet-friendly. The main obstacles faced during photogrammetry are photograph quality and spacing. Each photo must be perfectly focused and exposed, and must be spaced around the object to capture its every feature.
There must be sufficient overlap between photos so the rendering software knows where each shot belongs. Getting this spacing right can be achieved with some practice on large subjects, but is incredibly difficult with small objects.
When the code is in place, the subject needs to be well-lit so the camera can capture all of its precise details. The captured set of photos can then be processed using photogrammetry software. Could DIY photogrammetry be the future of desktop 3D scanning? Watch out, 3D scanner manufacturers!
